Well, so much for unity. In installed a theme from Anders Viklund on this page, which is pretty darn hard to have working together with the Yahoo! themes. Even the Somewhere Else menu is pretty un-cooperative with the rest of the ecosystem. What's more, it seems like my Played Lately widget doesn't auto-update anymore. Computers probably got named so, because they are complicated.

Wella wella, i spiced up this site, as well as a few other (even more) useless one with the Yahoo user interface library components. This means i now have a unified look between sites, but what's more fun, a unified "somewhere else" menu which is hosted in one place and used by any of the sites. Not precisely rocket surgery, but one has to start somewhere.

Ajaxifying

Yeah i've been busy, at work mostly. But tonight, to ease my mind, i'm trying something off-work. To include some simple ajaxification of this page, or more specifically, the played lately thingy there at the right. Or, if there's nothing at the right, then read the explanation below.

And i thought i had a clever hack. My Second PHP Script, which i thought would display last week's top ten played artists shows the full set of artists i've played last week. Yeah sure it's interesting, but it's ugly, bloated and just... non-minimalistic. And since it's parsed with an XML parser, there's no simple way i know of yet to stop after ten “parses”. So i'm ditching it. From now on, it's just the beautiful little display that says what artists i've been listening to latey or nothing at all.

It's been a good learning experience so far.

Lately played

My latest feat is the script that shows which artists i have been listening to. In true Nordic design tradition, it is built with a minimalistic result in mind. Here `s how it works:

• Retrieve the data feed from Last.FM, unless we have a cached copy no older than five minutes.
• Extract all the artists from the XML file, using a regular expression. The information can be found in the URLs describing the artist.
• Throw away multiple occurrences of the same artist. Format the list with commas between the artists and the word “and” before the last one. Remove URL encoding.
• If i haven't listened to any music for a while (i.e. the Last.FM list is empty), the script doesn't output anything.
